The Controller reports to the CFO and serves as a senior financial leader responsible for the financial management of the company and its project portfolio. In partnership with the CFO, the Controller bridges the gap between field operations and corporate finance, ensuring that complex construction projects remain profitable, compliant, and transparent. This role oversees the accounting department and is a key driver in system optimization and strategic risk management. To achieve success at Herrero Builders, we expect certain behaviors that are aligned with our core ideologies that will allow the CFO to perform the following tasks:
· Direct the preparation of timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
· Lead the general ledger function and the month-end/year-end close processes to ensure data integrity.
· Monitor daily cash positions and partner with the CFO to develop short-term and long-range forecasts to fund multi-phase operations.
· Supervise Accounts Payable and Receivable, with a specific focus on managing retainage, lien waivers, and collections to optimize working capital.
· Prepare and analyze monthly Work in Progress (WIP) schedules, including over/under billings, estimated costs-to-complete, and project gross margins.
· Audit labor, material, and subcontractor allocations; analyze variances between actual expenditures and original estimates.
· Partner with Project Managers and Estimators to review "Cost to Complete" projections, evaluate change order financial impacts, and provide insights for new bids.
· Monitor the recovery of internal labor and equipment costs through project billings.
· Design and maintain robust internal controls to prevent fraud, safeguard company assets, and ensure data accuracy.
· Oversee all tax compliance, including sales/use tax for construction, state contractor licensing, 1099 filings, and payroll tax deposits.
· Serve as the primary point of contact for external CPA firms during annual audits and reviews.
· Support commercial insurance programs, ensure project-specific COI requirements are met, and manage the subcontractor prequalification process.
· Serve as the functional owner of construction-specific accounting software, ensuring data flows seamlessly from the field to the back office.
· Identify inefficiencies and lead the implementation of new financial technologies, including automation and AI-driven reporting.
· Develop and coordinate system training for field staff and executives to ensure consistent data entry and reporting proficiency.
· Manage accounting department personnel, overseeing recruitment, performance reviews, and career development.
· Provide coaching to staff to drive a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.
Position Salary Range: $170,000 - $215,000
