Historic 19th Century Mansion Upgraded for Boys School

This historic 19th-century mansion is home to Stuart Hall for Boys, a K-8 day school, in Pacific Heights. Studio Bondy's design conceptually inserts a new building into the historic shell, bracing and anchoring to a new foundation while preserving the exterior. New elevators, systems, and modern educational spaces are all integrated with the existing structure. Historic interior details, such as decorative pilasters and balustrades, have been restored. The exterior design includes upgrades to play yards, a formal pedestrian entry, and student commons.

Herrero's work included a complete seismic upgrade of the existing historic mansion, renovation of the entire building and full ADA compliance with the addition of ramps and an elevator. The interior includes a new main lobby, faculty work room, enlarged faculty offices and faculty lounge state of the art classrooms; enlarged and modern classrooms with state-of-the-art furnishings and technology amenities; and remodel of Stuart Hall Annex to include two new second grade classrooms and new restrooms. The sitework involved improvements to the playground facilities, a new pedestrian and vehicular entry, a landscaped courtyard with benches and green screens, and new perimeter foundation anchored to sub-surface bedrock. Energy efficient design included radiant floor heating, high efficiency boiler, motion sensors to turn off lights, and fresh air supply and return in all classrooms.
