| Thoreau Center for Sustainability Seismic Upgrade and Renovation of 8 Historic Presidio Buildings 2 to 4 stories, 66,000 square feet Wood Frame Sustainable Green Construction Architect: Tanner, Leddy, Maytum & Stacy Architects Herrero’s largest green project was Phase Two of the Thoreau Center for Sustainability, a multi-tenant, nonprofit center located in the historic Presidio of San Francisco. Serving as a global center dedicated to addressing the world's most critical environmental, cultural, and social challenges, the buildings had to demonstrate the organization mission while appropriately supporting tenants. Five residential buildings and three World War I vintage hospital wards were renovated into commercial office space. Due to funding constraints, Herrero had only six months to complete the interior work, the utility infrastructure around the buildings, and landscaping. Work was completed under the continuous supervision of historic preservation architects, ensuring that all elements were maintained in keeping with Presidio standards. The “green” architectural plan used sustainably harvested wood, recycled building materials, natural fiber insulation (made from blue jeans) for walls and ceilings, non-toxic paints and energy-efficient designs that maximize sunlight and natural ventilation. In addition, Herrero managed a successful construction debris recycling program. |
